Piano Roll

The Piano roll is a way of displaying staves.

Note :  This kind of staff is only available in Harmony Assistant.

TERMINOLOGY

Music is dislayed as a grid.
Horizontal axis defines the time, vertical axis the note pitch. The more treble note, the higher on the grid.
Each time is divided into several cell.
Each note is displayed as a colored rectangle spanning one or more cells. This sets the start and end time position of the note.

The highest and lowest note pitches define the staff ambitus.
There can be several "layers" on top of each other, called voices. Voices are differentiated from each other by their color.
Each voice is edited independently and can be related with a different instrument.
The active voice can be changed, the others are displayed in gray and cannot be changed.
The boxes can be selected individually, continuously (time interval) or discontinuously.

HOW TO GET A PIANO ROLL STAFF? ?

By changing the type of an existing staff (Staves> Change staff type)
By adding a staff of this type in the document (Staves> Add staff)
By creating a document of this type (File> New)
By converting an entire document. (Score> Action> Piano Roll mode) Note that some layout information is lost during this operation.

GENERALITY

A piano roll staff can coexist with any of the other types of staves.
There can be as many piano roll staves and as many different voices in a single piano roll staff as you want.
Scroll mode is preferred for editing because it best fits the peculiarities of this type of staff.
It is recommended to set the left and right margins to zero to avoid gaps between measures. This spacing will nevertheless be compulsory if you mix piano roll and other types of staves in the same document.
Sung lyrics can be related with the piano roll.
A chord line can be related with the piano roll.
A guitar, bass, harmonica, accordion, etc. tablature, priority or not, can be related with the piano roll.
The tuning grid and therefore the accompaniments take the piano roll notes into account.
It is compatible with MyrWeb export and printing.

THE GRID

Adding a note outside the grid adapts the ambitus (view area). Use the resize handles (red squares) to manually change the grid ambitus.

The repeat, start and end music bars are managed.
The repeat symbol of the previous measure is allowed as well as the repeat symbol of the two previous measures.
The parts, jumps and targets are managed.

MEANING OF NOTES COLOR

If a note is selected individually, it is displayed in the color of the selection, defined in general preferences, "Screen" tab
Otherwise, if a note has been colored in a particular way it is displayed in that color.
Otherwise, it is displayed in the color of the symbols in its staff or in gray if the voice is not active.

VIRTUAL KEYBOARD

Note pitches are displayed on a vertical virtual keyboard to the left of the staff.

This keyboard is insensitive to the transposition of the associated instrument. Played notes are displayed on the virtual keyboard. A click on the virtual keyboard plays the note.

GLOBAL VISION

In scroll mode, the "Blueprint" tool palette displays the entire staff in a reduced fashion and allows you to move quickly through the staff.

ATTACHED PALETTE

For each of the piano roll staves, on the left of the virtual keyboard you see a specific area with two parts: on the left the tools and on the right the voices. These are quick access to the most used commands. This palette can be automatically hidden when music is playing.

Tools are :
  • Add tool to add notes, divide them, merge them
  • Select tool to select notes by area or individually
  • Erase tool to erase notes
  • Injection tool, for example to inject effects into an existing cell
  • Grace tool to add small notes to cells
  • Try tool to play the notes individually
  • Velocities tool to edit the velocities (power) of notes
  • Magnifier tool to change the display scale
  • Slide tool to define a slide between two notes. Click on the start note then on the end note. By default the slide is continuous. Right click the slide to configure it.
  • Time division tool to define in how many cells to display per beat. You can also use the key tool.
  • Cutter tool to cut one or more notes in half.
  • Glue tool to solder the notes.
  • Alignment mode which defines whether precise positioning is active or not.
  • Adding a voice. A new instrument is created and associated with the voice. A color and a voice name are assigned automatically.
  • Activate all voices

Then, each voice is represented by a colored dot.
  • A click activates the voice in the grid.
  • A right click opens the contextual menu for voice settings.
  • A long click allows you to move the voice to change its position in the voice list.
  • A double click edits the associated instrument.

EDIT MODE (pencil)

A click on an empty cell adds a note. The duration is defined in the note duration palette (dots and double dots are taken into account). If no duration is defined, this will be the duration of the last handled event.
When adding a note, holding down the button extends that note to the right.

- A click outside a note with the shift key pressed opens the contextual menu for setting the grid:
  • Select the current voice, the color of the voice is displayed via a dot
  • Edit the appearance and general reactions of the grid
  • Change the color of the notes. It is recommended to have a different note color per voice.
  • Change text color
  • Change the name of the voice
  • Add a new voice. A different color will be calculated. The name of the voice will be the name of the chosen instrument.
  • Duplicate the voice. The created voice will be identical except for the color of the notes.
  • Merge the voice. All the elements associated with the voice will be duplicated on the next voice and the voice will be deleted
  • Divide the voice according to the note whose pitch was clicked.
  • Remove the voice. The current voice will be deleted after confirmation if it is not empty.
  • Remove empty voices. Unnecessary voices will be deleted.
  • Number of time divisions: change the number of divisions and adapt the notes accordingly
  • Calculate and Apply Ambitus: The lowest and highest score are calculated and used as the new viewing interval.
  • Add a line: adds a note pitch to the grid before or after the limit of the range depending on the position of the click.

- A click in a note with the shift key pressed opens the contextual menu for configuring the note:
  • Fine note editing
  • Generate a chord from this note
  • Divide note
  • Merge with the next note (on the same line even if it is not contiguous)
  • Merge with the previous note (on the same line even if it is not contiguous)
  • Start a slide at this note. You will then choose the end note of the slide.

- A right click outside of a note adds a rule-dependent note.
- A double click on a symbol digitally edits it
- A long click puts a slur.
- Pressing the Alt key temporarily switches to Selection mode.
- Pressing the Ctrl key (Command on macOS) key temporarily switches to Delete mode.

SELECT MODE (lasso)

The usual operations apply to the selection: copy, delete, shift, etc.

You can :
  • by left-clicking, select all the notes between two time positions
  • by right clicking, select all the notes in an area discontinuously
  • by clicking on a box with the shift key pressed or the right button, create a discontinuous selection of notes

A long right click on one of the notes in the selection applies an operation to all of the selected notes.

A long right click on the selection outside of a note quickly performs:
  • Copy

VELOCITY EDIT MODE

When this mode is activated, the velocities are represented by a color intensity in the box. The numerical value of the velocity (0 to 127) is displayed in the box.
A long click outside of a box defines a continuous selection. Shift + click expand the selection.
Shift plus click on a box adds the box to the discontinuous selection.
A right click outside a box selects all the boxes in an area discontinuously.
A right click on a cell numerically changes the velocity of the cell or selection
