Newbie queries

Warm greetings, Just joined!! Just Downloaded PDFtoMusic. Am I right in assuming it only works for FREE PDF music. I.E Classical and a bit of Jazz? I buy music from time to time, and this is the music I would like to utilise. Is this possible? How do you create a midi file from the music? It obviously plays the music in the key that music is in? Can you change the key? Thank you for your indulgence Henry.

Thank you Didier, BUT, once more I must ask you:- Can you only use FREE PDf's of old classical music and old Jazz OR can you convert music you purchase and Digital download to PDF for use in the PDFtoMusic program? Henry.

| You've already stated that you 'buy music from time to time'. Why don't you use some of it to try it out for yourself instead of giving Didier such a hard time. How many times do you want him to answer your question? He's already stated that it will work for vectorial PDF and that it won't work for bitmap PDF. How is he supposed to know what type you have bought?

Bampah. How is asking a question giving him a hard time. This is a forum. I do not know what a vectorial or a bitmap PDF is. When you order music from say Musicroom or Musicnotes you download it and print it out. It does note come in PDF format. My question still is - can you utilise/convert this to PDF to use with PDFtoMUSIC? Or does it only work with the FREE music PDF's you can get on the net, for classical and old jazz? I do not mean to offend. Henry.

Well, It's my turn to give it a try... It is true : you can't make out a vectorial pdf from a bitmap pdf just by openong them in, say, Acobat Reader or any pdf reader. Once printed, you can't make a difference either. Most people won't bother about this, sa long as they can do what they want ; read or print the .pdf file. However, for PDFToMusic, there is a huge difference... It is able to read and "translate" a vectorial .pdf but not a bitmap one. To simplify, a vectorial file is made of lines and circles whose bearings can be interpreted as staves, notes, etc by PDFToMusic. A bitmap file contains black and white dots (here I over-simplify once more) and they have to be understood as lines, circles and font characters. PDFToMusic is not able to interpret and translate these. Now, as long as no one can tell straight away what sort of .pdf you will get from the Internet, there is only one way to find out : give it a try. Have you tested it over some pdf files you have on your computer ? No one is able to tell you that all the files in MusicRoom or MusicFiles are vectorial pdf (apart from the people who made them) I have quite a few scores by JS Bach which PDFTM is unable to interpret (they are bitmaps) and quite a few modern music pages that PDFTM has turned into .myr files... As for the key changes, MIDI exports (and plenty of other functions) I can tell you that once the files have been converted into .myr format (Myriad's format) HA is able to do the job. It can also print them, play them, allow you to alter them and even export them in vectorial .pdf format (by using an external free piece of software)

| PDFTM doesn't care about the origin of the .pdf file (free, purchased, borrowed, home-made, stolen, copyrighted or not) The only thing that matters is the format : vectorial or bitmap. That's all.

Henry, A question such as "can I convert" may be ambiguous. There is 1. a technical aspect. Previous answers said "yes, with a vector PDF". Practically, it means a PDF file created as a print output of a music editor (HA, MA and similar products by other companies), and NOT a PDF file created by scanning a printed output. I would guess that modern editions sold via download will often be outputs of music editors, and that converting them via PDFtoMusic will work. 2. a legal aspect. "Can I" may mean "Am I legally authorized to?" the fact that it would be technically feasible does not mean it is legal - same as with a photocopier. The answer depends of the license provided with the purchase. This license may probably tell you how many copies you are able to make/print from the downloaded file, if you are allowed to make digital copies, etc. In addition, some types of copies or interpretations can be authorized by the laws applicable in your country. In France you can always make private copies for your own use, for instance to listen or learn in the key you wish. But it does not allow to redistribute the work. lethere can be authorized

Hi Andre, This a company I like to use to purchase music from:- http://www.musicnotes.com/commerce/basket.asp You select and pay for 1 copy. This allows you to print the one copy only. You can, of course, copy it yourself if you need to. The only thing I can do after that is scan it to my music file as a jpeg file. How do I test it from there, or is it not possible? I have an iMac computer. Henry.

I have just thought of another comparison to explain the vectorial vs bitmap thing. Let's take the example of the file containing a page from a novel and on the other hand a file containing a music score. In "vectorial" format, the file has been created by a programme and saved in "readable" format (.rtf for the word processor, vectorial .pdf for the music) You can then open the file with your own word processor (Word, OpenOffice, Works, Abiword, etc.) or read/convert it with PDFTM. Now, in "bitmap" format, the page has been printed on some sheet of paper, then scanned, like a photo. The resulting file cannot be read by a word pocessor (novel page) nor PDFTM (music score) To get the information contained in the bitmap (scanned picture) file, you need another type of software : an OCR (optical character recognition, like Textbridge or Omnipage) for the novel or an OMR (optical music recognition, like Sharpeye, VivaldiScan or OMeR) Such programmes will convert the tiny pixels into characters (OCR) or notes (OMR) and create a "readable" file for your word processor (novel page) or music programme (score), accordingly. last bit : your novel page may have been written by Emily Brontë and you have the right to publish it in your own page layout, because it is now public domain, or it is taken from J.K. Rowling and you have no right to publish it (except for private use). As for the music, if the page is by WA Mozart, go ahead, but if it is by McCartney, you can't.

| If you work on a scan, then PDFTM will not be able to help you. You need a OMR (see previous message) Now, if the scan is quite clear and shrap, you may try a trial version of OMeR (another Myriad product) Mind you, it is far from perfect and cannot process lyrics. But it is extremely inexpensive. So, you can't expect too much from it. Myriad is currently developping a new OMR and I bet it will be -as usual- an excellent product. Let's wait and see. Last note : I am not familiar with Apple machines, so I hope someone else will report on the subject better than I can.
