MP4 and WMA audio formats

For those of you who create WAV or MP3 audio from your Melody and Harmony files, and who want high compression: Microsoft Media Player WMA format, and Apple Quicktime 6 (not older) MP4 format, are able to compress music very well. These are newer algorithms. In the lower-quality region, for smaller files, WMA and MP4 sound much better than low-sample MP3 or compressed AIF. Free software for making WMA from WAV or MP3 is available from Microsoft (Windows Media Encoder). But to my knowledge, MP4 is only available by purchasing the "Pro" version of Quicktime Player. If you are creating high-quality sound files, for CD recording, then this information may not be useful.

We are always open to this kind of suggestion. However, please note : - WMA is a proprietary format from Microsoft - MP4 format is copyrighted and cannot be used freely. Until now, there is no legal restriction to the use of the MP3 format, but if it changes, we will stop supporting this format. At present, because of this, a few high-quality new free formats are emerging, but we have still to wait a bit they are more stable before starting to implementing them.

How does the Ogg Vorbis format compare to MP4? It's patent-free and open source and is said to compare favourably with MP3. For those who've never heard of this format, there's a bit of information at: http://www.vorbis.com/intro.html p.s. I've just found a better link: http://www.vorbis.com/faq.psp

Is it possible to write ID tag v2 in exported MP3 with Harmony ? I think these tags are writed at the head of the MP3. These tags supports longer author name, title, descriptions, copyright.... You can modify these tags with WinAmp.

However, we must first : - Be sure the format is stable and won't be changed in a near future - Be sure the encoder/decoder does not take too much space (we would not want to double the size of the application to support this format) - Read carefully the licence to ensure we can use it free of charge in a non-free program. This might be one of the major problem. - Oops, I almost forgot the most important topic : this format must first be supported by most of the players, CD burners, etc. Supporting an export format that nobody can import is not very useful...

| It's also possible with windows XP: left click on your file and choose "properties", then, click on the 2nd tab (i don't know the english name, but in french, it's "résumé"). Let's click on "advanced" and enjoy yourself . Just a question to Olivier : why the answer for "number of track" is an illogical number (it has no sense of having one) and the "kind" is (255)?

Myriad is correct, that WMA and MP4 are proprietary formats. But these formats can be created starting from WAV or MP3. Since Melody and Harmony can already export WAV and MP3, there is no need for Myriad to add more conversion software. As I mentioned, conversion to WMA can be done free, but MP4 not. I will also give Ogg Vorbis a try. Many Windows users have a popular auxiliary program called "Irfan View" for viewing images in many graphics formats. irfan View also has the capability to play audio files, including Ogg Vorbis. So there are already many users who can play that format, evn though they don't know it! If you do use any of these formats, be sure to retain your original MUS (or WAV) file. That way, if the proprietary format changes, you can re-convert. As for writing MP3 ID tags: There are a number if IDn tag editors available for free, or as shareware, from the usual Internet download sources. These work on an already-existing MP3 file.
