Translating the board

Hi, i have been using a browser called "Crazybrowser". Its interesting that it have a button that use the service of Altavista translator to translate a page from a language to other. I dont know how this board works, bat maybe Didier or Oliver can add a button at the bottom of the screen to translate a topic from french to english or other.
Example: when i press the button to translate from french to english, is executed:
http://babel.altavista.com/translate.dyn?doit=done&BabelFishFrontPag e=yes&enc=utf8&bblType=url&url=%s&lp=fr_en
, and you see the same, translated.
Well, an idea to a better understanding.
You can translate also from english to french, spanish, and you imagin.

Agreed , a built in translator would be helpful. I have been using a freeware translator called Smart Translator available at : http://igspot.ig.com.br/lucianosiqueira/smart/index.html
perhaps the author would allow Myriad to use it on their site ?

It installed quickly, and it seems to work well. It does not come with a help file, but after a few minutes of experimentation it becomes clear how to use it.
I translated several posts from French to English and it seemed to work OK, but I would not trust it to send a French version of my posts along with the English.
It did not do very well when I had it translate English to French, then retranslate the French it produced back to English, but maybe that was not a fair test.

I have begun using the Opera 6.04 browser. It has a built-in translator. Just select and right-click on a phrase, then choose the languages. This is faster than using an external program. Opera is available free from ww.opera.com . It also offers email, Opera web-email, and a newsreader.

In my experience, ALL translating software is BAD. You should be very careful when using it. The problem is that proper semantics in not understood by these programs. The result is a translation that most often does not grasp the real meaning of what you were trying to say. Translation is most likely done by a word by word basis. And if your own grammar is less than perfect, it gets even worse shen translated.
If you insist using translation programs please observe a few guidelines :
1) Keep your sentences short ! (Lots of punctuations instead of seperating sentences by commas)
2) Don't use words that could have alternative meanings.

It was never my intention to suggest that a translation program should be used when posting to the board. That would be foolish because one would never know if the program translated his message accurately. I use the program only so that I can read and get the gist of a message written in a language that I do not know very well.

I just wrote a post along the same lines. I think we're very fortunate in being to read so much of the board in more than one language.
It really helps if when you are reading and translating into your own language you have the words translated in the passage - even without any idiomatic accuracy!
One can then, with a small amount of French, decode the passage and get some idea of the writer's meaning.
Good idea, Sean - I shall explore your suggestion.

I just tried Smart Translator which Sean recommended. I rate it very useful, and could make good sense of some posts.
As it's freeware, it is unlikely that there would be any problem about using it on the Myriad site.
On the other hand, I can't see the problem if you have programs running on your computer.
