Staff re-sizing

Help please:

I am trying to write music for guitar with regular staff and TAB (priority regular G clef, not TAB), however when I try to input a note lower than A, the curser enters the TAB area and turns into numbers. I went to the doc's and under 'resizing a staff' the following quote appears:
Click on the horizontal red line below the staff configuration icons in the staff margin and drag the cursor down

I cannot find this red line or the so called configuration icons. The only icon I find is the Staves Group Icon, and the Name Icon as I move the mouse over the left margin.

I also do not see the black triangle which opens the configuration icons.

From your description I'd guess that you're in 'Page mode' - so go to the menu (Score > Page mode setup) and tick the option 'Display control handles'.

You should now see 2 small red triangles (not red lines) to the left of your staves. Click on the lower red triangle and drag it downward to give you more room to enter notes on your top staff.
