I am trying out Galerie for the first time

Bonjour,

Je ne parle que deux mots de français. Je peux comprendre les postes ici, mais c'est plus difficile d'écrire. Je devrais écrire en anglais, non?

I just discovered  this app and dl the 3.3 beta21 of Galerie (because the scaling of pictures with QT was poor, and the beta uses a new scaling method). I was happy to discover that I could export directly to my .mac iDisk folder in Sites. It was, of course, a small gallery (only one picture), but the app did create the folders, pages, thumb, original, and media files across with no problem. I thought I needed ftp (which I don't use). However, it seems to export just as iPhoto does to the iDisk. With JAlbum I had to drag/drop to the iDisk.

So I am unsure now which app to use. I really like working with a Mac app when I can rather than a Mac/PC hybrid like JAlbum appears to be. JAlbum has fine graphics, but the html pages are quite long and full of code options I don't even need. And comments/titles from iPhoto have been sporadically difficult to extract in JAlbum. The Java here looks different from JAlbum. It has $tags and <%...%>, whereas here it is $tags$. Can you tell me what the difference is about? Is it a different version of Java here?

You have the selection of variables I need, so I hope to be able to set up my templates. It is easy enough to write html/css.

I wonder if anyone else here has uploaded  entire albums to iDisk using Galerie on 56K. Does it work as well and as quickly as iPhoto  and iBlog uploads? I try to avoid problems with iDisk, which can cause the Finder to lock up, and I have to force restart the computer when that happens. Large drag/drops have caused this to happen a few times.

Hi,

Yes, you can write in English here.

As co-author of this program I know a lot about Galerie but I have no experience with iDisk. I do not have a .Mac account, I never used iDisk and I did not even know that Galerie could save a gallery directly to iDisk. Nice though, wouldn't you just try with a larger gallery?

About the $tags$, those have nothing to do with Java. They are just strings (the dollar signs could have been anything else) that Galerie uses to replace with html code when a gallery is generated. See the "Building Templates" manual for more information. In the final pages no $tags$ are left.

I've been working with Galerie all day, and I really like the simplicity compared to JAlbum. When designs get too cluttered with icons and colors, it isn't about the photos anymore. I was also concerned because the albums I made with JAlbum are loaded with .js files, and that may not work for all visitors to my site, as I understand it. I can't edit out the .js because I don't understand the java templates that well.

Well, I was intrigued by the $tags$ because iBlog templates also contain these, and there are references in the files to xml and xhtml. Galerie est xml aussi?

The reason I tried the iDisk as actual target for the small album is that it was available in target choices, along with folders on my HD. I regularly save files with TextEdit and WebMinimalist (HTML editor) directly to the iDisk, along with directly exporting photos from iPhoto. iBlog has ftp publishing and .Mac publishing to the iDisk, and it works quickly. I'm not sure if it's a special arrangement or just simply making the connection to iDisk as iPhoto does. I heard talk of the ftp transfers being quicker in one mode than in another, so I don't know if the Galerie transfer to iDisk will be too slow or at the usual rate.

I've been working on a custom template today after seeing PBase Like, which I really like. When I finish making the template, I will try about 10 photos in a folder targeted to iDisk and see how it goes. Drag/drop of large kb can result in the iDisk hanging up, so I don't know if it will work to send an entire album of 20-25 photos over. However, iPhoto can handle big uploads rather well. Who knows?   Sometimes apps do better than drag/drop.

Quelle surprise!

The templates and the code produced by Galerie contain html, some css, and some JavaScript. No real xml.

When you have tried this, please tell us how it worked. The drag and drop issue may be a Finder problem rather than a iDisk problem.

Your French is no doubt better than mine and I admire your attempts to write in French as much as possible. I am Dutch and I hardly used French since I learned it at school and that is more than 40 years ago. I too can understand the French postings, but I didn't even try yet to write in French here.

Yes, I noticed you were Dutch in another post I read here. I read most of the posts yesterday trying to get a feel for the app. I have a hard time deciding on a color theme. Art is something I've never studied. It all looks good to me, but then it turns out looking like a carnival instead of a photo album.

Interesting that you mention the Finder. I have 10.3.3. Actually the entire computer freezes occasionally on iDisk uploads. I try to take it slow and easy because I don't like restarting the computer as a last resort to free the Finder. AplCare told me to log out/in once a day to keep things clear. That has helped some. Previously I just used sleep mode. This is my first computer, so I'm no expert on the fine points of computer functioning.

BTW, is there a way to replace the "Click for original image" with a download.gif image (it's a download arrow), so that one can click on the arrow to go to the original rather than clicking on text? That function seems different than the previous/next, where it is easy to code a .gif in to replace "Previous" in the template.

I could change the text to download.gif in the html after generating the album, but I don't see how to do it in the template.

When you press command-option-escape, you will be presented a dialog that allows you to force-quit a frozen program or relaunch the Finder.

Replacing the link with a .gif is not possible, not in the template. Galerie can make a text link with $FULL_IMAGE_LINK$ or a button link with $FULL_IMAGE_BUTTON$. A different text in link or button can be defined in the Preferences, Language tab.

Thank you for the information. I had tried coding the html .gif img src into the text box, which didn't work.

Yes, I know about the force-quit and relaunch dialogue. They always work, except if iDisk is involved. If a problem arises there (the connection is interrupted or it just spontaneously hangs up on a large upload), force quit may or may not work after a few tries (if iPhoto is the frozen app) and Relaunch the Finder doesn't work at all. A restart or shutdown is the only option.

It's only happened a few times, but it made me uneasy that force-quit and relaunch didn't work (endless spinning beachball). So now I transfer a few photos (10-20 per batch) from iPhoto or one folder of files at a time with the Finder drag/drop. Several small uploads has never hung up the iDisk.

Creative thinking!  It will not work as Galerie will replace the essential characters < and > and " by their html codes.

Which OSX version do you use? As I understand it, in 10.3 one has a local copy of the iDisk which is synchronised regularly, making using iDisk a lot faster. Have you ever tried to just wait for 10 minutes or so and see if the problem resolves itself?

It would be nice if Galerie could indeed save a gallery to iDisk and thus publish the gallery directly to ones .Mac website.

You do not use 10.3? I have 10.3.3, and tried the local iDisk when I first got Panther. iBlog had problems with it, and told us to disable the local iDisk for its publishing because it works better with direct publishing to .mac online.

It is also generally problematical at 56K on small macs. 10% of the sync is faulty, i.e., the file is half-uploaded so the page displays half a page. I could  "touch" the file (retype a word or something), which modified the file date, so on the next sync it would resync that file, and yet it might come through again half uploaded. At OSX discussions this was fairly common on small computers at 56K (iBook), and many of us abandoned the local iDisk for that reason. I don't like to have half-uploaded pages on the internet for several hours waiting for the resync to correct the page. So, with regular iDisk, I can manually check all new uploaded pages, and reupload them if the upload is faulty (half-uploaded). Manually it only takes a few minutes.

The iDisk is okay, but it can overload. "Wait a few minutes..." Yes, sometimes I disconnect from it and reconnect a little later and it does better. It has no problem uploading small batches at a time.

He he... yes, I also tried [code] and [HTMLCode] tags to enclose the href in the Click for original image box, which totally printed out to the page also.

Ho, I found the workaround:-- an iPhoto album of pictures (arranged in numerical order) whose file names are numbers  (1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc.), then write the html on the page template as

"<a href="../fullsize/$NUM_PAGE$.jpg"><img src="download.gif" width="20" height="25"  border="0" title="Click for original image" alt="Click for original image"></a>"

or one could connect from the current picture to the original (someone asked about this awhile back in another post, I think):

"<a href="../fullsize/$NUM_PAGE$.jpg"><img class="image" src="$IMAGE$" height="300" width="300" border="0" alt="$IMAGE$" title="Click for original image"></a>"

You are amazing.
Yes, that will work, though only when the pictures are numbered that way.

I do use 10.3.3, but I do not use iDisk as I do not have a .Mac account. I suppose the problems are at least partly related to the modem connection. Not only is it slow, but it may disconnect in the middle of an upload. With a fast and permanent internet connection, like with cable or (a)dsl, iDisk will probably work much better.

Thank you for the kind words. I am devastated after the recent .js wars. A little encouragement goes a long way.    Après tout ça, the button is quite pretty too. I am really enjoying the Mac interface on this app. Gives me the feeling it's built for the Mac.

I didn't know what I was buying when I bought .mac (I thought it was sort of a mac users club). Pretty funny, but it's useful. I'm really considering DSL. It's probably pennywise and pound foolish to expect my little mac to grind on through uploads by the hour. And losing the connection is generally the cause of the hangups. Now I upload everything between midnight and 6am, when the connection is more stable.

Well, on to dl 3.3.
