Users already know: If Virtual Singer continues a note through a rest, try editing the voice. Use the "interpretation" tab, and lower the minimum rest duration.

But I recently learned: If I am applying Virtual Singer to an existing music file (such as an imported MIDI), it may be that some of the notes have been programmed to extend beyond the nominal time shown on the sheet music. That is, the interpretation is not in strict time. If so, the duration of the note may be edited by double-clicking the note. This allows the interpretive insertion or removal of rests, without the visible use of rests.

When you have a big file, you can also edit all the notes by Ctrl+A, Edit>Actions>...
I often use this method with the midi files I download.
